The Whole New World in Northwest Philadelphia
Posted by Nicholas Cerminara on 04/13/16
It’s official: Philadelphia is cool again. The hip metropolis has been blossoming during the past two decades; a gentrified renaissance of sorts.
The change is everywhere, but head to Northwest Philly and you’ll find a change happening in Manayunk and Bala Cynwyd, an area full of millennial potential and a unique urban-suburban mixture. And while you’re there, look no further than the luxury real estate at The Royal Athena to find the perfect contemporary scene.
Manayunk and Bala Cynwyd offer the best of both worlds. It’s city living without the city prices. It’s suburban living without the commonly perceived uneventful suburban life. The luxury living Royal Athena exemplifies this perfectly, and here’s why:
Odds are that you work in the city. Commuting from the Royal Athena to Philadelphia is hassle-free, quick and inexpensive. The Athena’s luxury real estate is only a mile walk to the closest Septa bus stop, and just a five minute drive to the train rolling out of Cynwyd Station. Both commutes are under 30 minutes. And, of course, if you prefer to drive yourself, it’s still just a 20 minute commute, tops, into Center City — more than easily accessible.
Paint the town
Bala Cynwyd and Manayunk, especially, offer a lively nightlife scene. In Manayunk (just over the Manayunk Bridge to which Athena residents boast exclusive access in addition to their modern luxury apartments), Main Street hosts a vast amount of restaurants, bars and clubs. Manayunk’s main drag is full of young professionals and has become a weekend destination in its own right, with people coming up from Center City to check out the rousing scene.
Keep your arm and your leg
The median rent in Center City for a two bedroom property, according to Trulia, is around $2,100-$2,300 per month for 800 to 950 square feet. Compare that to the $1,900 two-bedroom furnished apartments for rent at the Royal Athena with up to 1,150 square feet of floor space and seemingly endless amenities (http://www.theroyalathena.com/living-spaces/amenities/). Oh, and fully furnished apartments available for rent.
It’s no contest. More space at a cheaper cost, plus the intrinsic bonus of being situated along the banks of the Schuylkill.
An active lifestyle
There are a lot of sports and adventure going on in and around the area. With access to many running and biking trails, biking is kind of a big deal; people bike everywhere. But if you’re more about sports and less about nature, there is the Manayunk Sport and Social Club, which offers 15 league sports throughout the year that include many gym class favorites like softball, dodge ball, kickball and way more. Or head over to AFC Fitness Club, in Bala-Cynwyd, where they offer an array of classes as well as Physical Therapy. All great ways to meet new people as well — just like the socialization model that the luxury apartments at the Royal Athena have been built upon.
What else makes a neighborhood hotter than a massive influx of millennials? Outside of an abundance of luxury living options, nothing. In a six-year span, between 2006 and 2012, more than 100,000 millennials came of age in or moved into Philadelphia.
Manayunk has one of the highest concentrations of millennials in any of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods due, largely in part, to the fact that young professionals do not want to live directly in the city but prefer the trendier, up-and-coming outlier neighborhoods that offer luxury real estate.
It remains clear that Bala-Philly, and now places like The Royal Athena, are ideal examples of what young, classy, hip and luxury-seeking professionals are looking for in both location and apartments for rent.
